ALS Compressed Air & Nitrogen Audit
PREVENTATIVE

Compressed air and nitrogen are among the most energy-intensive utilities on a manufacturing or processing site. Most sites have never had either system independently audited. Compressed air often runs harder and longer than necessary, and in many cases the pressure system is being operated without a current Written Scheme of Examination, a legal requirement under the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000.
ALS Industrial Services carry out comprehensive compressed air and nitrogen audits for UK manufacturing and processing sites. The audit examines the full system: compressor performance and energy draw, distribution and pressure drop, air treatment and quality, nitrogen purity and supply method, leak volume, and PSSR compliance. We issue a written report with costed findings and clear priorities for action.
What the audit covers
The audit is carried out by an ALS engineer and structured across eight areas. Each area is assessed independently, and findings in one area often explain problems observed in another: a poorly maintained dryer, for example, will affect nitrogen generator performance and air quality simultaneously.
The audit is flexible. Not every site uses nitrogen, and some clients need a focused assessment of one or two areas rather than the full system. We agree which areas are relevant before the visit so the audit covers what applies to your operation.
| Audit area | What we assess |
|---|---|
| Compressor efficiency | Output vs power draw; specific power benchmarked against industry norms; VSD suitability for the site load profile |
| Compressed air quality | Particle count, pressure dew point and oil content tested and classified against ISO 8573-1:2010 purity classes |
| Air treatment | Dryer performance; filter differential pressure; dew point achieved vs required; contamination management and environmental compliance |
| Pressure and distribution | Pressure measured at compressor outlet, post-treatment and at point of use; pressure drop mapped across the full distribution network |
| Compressed air leaks | Ultrasonic leak detection across the full distribution system; each leak tagged with its location, estimated flow rate and annualised cost |
| Nitrogen purity | Purity level tested at point of use and compared against the actual requirements of each application; over-specification identified where present |
| Nitrogen supply method | Supply method reviewed against on-site generation alternatives (PSA or membrane); ROI modelled where a switch is viable |
| PSSR 2000 compliance | Verification that a current Written Scheme of Examination is in place, covers all qualifying vessels, and that examinations are being carried out in accordance with it |
What you receive
Following the audit we issue a written report containing:
- ✓Benchmarked compressor performance data and efficiency assessment
- ✓ISO 8573-1 air quality classification for each test point
- ✓A full leak inventory with estimated flow rates and annualised energy costs
- ✓Nitrogen purity results and a cost comparison for alternative supply methods where relevant
- ✓PSSR compliance status and any actions required
- ✓A prioritised action list with projected ROI for each recommendation
How it works
Three straightforward steps, with minimal disruption to your operation.
Request a callback
Tell us a little about your site. One of our team calls you back to understand your system, agree which areas are relevant and arrange a convenient visit.
On-site audit
We assess the agreed areas on site, surveying for leaks and measuring how your system performs under real demand.
Report and recommendations
You receive a clear written report with costed findings, ranked priorities and projected ROI, plus an engineer to walk you through it.
Request a callback
If your energy bills are rising, your compressor runs continuously or you have not had an independent audit recently, an ALS audit shows you where money is being wasted and what it costs to put right. Fill in the short form just below and one of our team will call you back, with no obligation.

Talk to us today
Whether you need a one-off survey or want to include leak detection as part of a regular maintenance programme, we will provide our expert advice and the best way to move forward, with no obligation.
